A toad is any of a number of species of amphibians in the order Anura characterized by dry, leathery skin, brown coloration, and wart-like parotoid glands. A distinction between frogs and toads, though common in popular culture, is not made in taxonomy, where toads are spread across families Bufonidae, Bombinatoridae, Discoglossidae, Pelobatidae, Rhinophrynidae, Scaphiopodidae, and Microhylidae. The characteristic features of toads are a result of convergent evolution in dry habitats. A group of toads is called a "Knot." Toads cannot transmit warts to people through handling or skin contact. The bumps on a toad's skin help the animal blend into its environment visually by breaking up its outline. Also, the paratoid gland is often mistaken as 'warts'. They are present on healthy specimens and are not a result of infection. One example of a "toad", Bufo fowleri. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Toads" How can I attract more toads to my garden? Q. I have found toads are very helpful in my backyard garden- they eat ants and slugs, and I think even caterpillars. I want to attract more toads to my garden- and get them to stay? How can i make my garden more toad-friendly? Asked by Toads and Frogs - Tue Jun 2 11:03:51 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Three things: Pond (for breeding) If you make a pond for them grow some plants around the edge and leave the area around it to grow a bit wild. They like it like that. Log pile (for hiding in) Wildlife area (left to nature) So that they ccan hide in it and find plenty of wild food there. Good luck and happy toading! :D Also don't use slug pellets, pesticides, or artificial fertilisers as they can poison toads. Answered by Rory - Tue Jun 2 11:40:15 2009 Can I put my two Fire Belly toads in a 30 gallon aquarium with 4 female bettas? Q. I can create land for the toads and I've rigged up the aquarium so they can't escape. I'd really love to have them all in the same tank, I just don't want my bettas getting eaten. Is this something I should worry about? Asked by SeaBrooks - Mon Jul 14 13:37:45 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If the fish can fit in the toad's mouth at all, it's in danger of being eaten or savaged. There may be some issues with keeping the temperature suitable for everyone. Toads prefer below 70 degrees, while bettas are more suited for a steady temperature of 76 or so. Also, one betta should have 2 or 3 gallons to itself, so if you'll want about 10 gallons of water in your tank for 4 betta. It may be easier to create a vivarium for the toads and get a 10 gallon for the betta (: Answered by Heather - Mon Jul 14 19:57:01 2008 What kinds of toads live in San Bernardino County, California?
Q. I am mostly interested in toads that can be found in the desert side of the San Bernardino mountains or the "Summit Valley" area. According to my research, the red spotted toad (bufo punctatus) and the arroyo toad (bufo californicus) can be found here, but it seems like there should be other species. Asked by rockn2country - Mon Jul 5 02:56:53 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I live in Los Angeles. The local toad around here is the "California toad," Bufo boreas halophilus. It looks like they're common where you live too. See the link. Answered by emucompboy - Mon Jul 5 06:39:21 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Toads" |
