How do you know if a toad is pregnant?
Q. There's this toad outside my house, it looks really really fat and bloated and it's there like every night.
Asked by actionbo09 - Sat Jul 7 22:54:04 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They don't get pregnant and then have a baby... They lay eggs. Toads gets a little-bit bloated looking before it lays eggs Slight fattening around the tummy. Often times though, you really won't be able to tell.

How long can symptoms from a dog eating a toad go unnoticed?
Q. I fear my 1 year old lab/ret. may have eaten a toad about 3 hours ago. I called an emergency #, and they told me to watch for salivation and/or collapsing of my dog. Neither have occurred, and she is acting normal. Would you say it is likely that she either didn't eat the toad, or will be ok?
Asked by paille_20 - Tue Jul 29 23:52:41 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I highly doubt that she ate the toad. I'm in south Florida and we have tons of poisonous toads that come out at night which is why I I always keep my dog leashed at night. My dog got a toad once and she started salivating and foaming at the mouth within seconds of licking it. You would have known long before now if she ate it. She will be fine :-)

What kind of toad, for licking, gives a hallucinogenic effect?
Q. I have read several articles on "toad licking". I am just curious what type toads that are found in the US (also as household pets sometimes) produce this venom from its glands.
Asked by I *Heart* Plato - Sat Dec 29 03:01:13 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The toad which produces the hallucinogenic substance you are describing is the Colorado River Toad, Bufo alvarius. However, you will not get high by licking it- you would have to dry and smoke the skin to get that effect. People who lick toads thinking they can get high are only going to find themselves getting sick. The cane toad (Bufo marinus) which a previous poster mentioned produces a neurotoxic poison from its skin glands which contains almost no psychoactive substances. Licking this toad will not get you high, but will make you very sick and possibly kill you. (The cane toad is not native to the US, and is considered to be an introduced pest in North America and in Australia.)

Q. I found a baby toad and caught it. I want to know how I can keep it alive. If I let it go the chances of it surviving are extremely slim because of the area I live in.
Asked by Emily G - Sat Jun 30 19:30:11 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Here is a great site to help you out - including what you can do to set up proper housing The big item is this "Ideally, your frogs housing will depend on its natural habitat." So you might want to identify what type of toad it is, and find out more about its speficic needs. Another thought to bear in mind "Unlike many other types of herps, like alligators or snakes, frogs have the wonderful ability to adapt to different situations." Even though sometimes conditions might seem unfavorable, somehow the frogs have managed to survive and even breed in the conditions from which it came. :) Should be just fine as a pet though, so long as you house and feed it properly.

Can I put a green tree frog and a fire belly toad in the same habitat?
Q. I am curious if I can put a green tree frog and a fire belly toad in the same habitat, or tank. Is this possible? Okay, thanks everyone. -Elizabeth K, I have never been to a Josh Groban concert, but it's one of my dreams!

A. NO A: Fire belly toads are toxic and will foul the water source, altho this exposure might not kill the tree frog straight away it will shorten its lifespan dramatically. and if he taod is eaten by the frog then it will likely die. B: fire belly toads and green tree frogs need different environmental needs, such as temp and enclosure layout, it'll be almost impossible to create the correct types of set up for both of them. C: all the other mixing issues such as stress, disease/bacterial/parasit ic transfer and agression. (more indepth here

A. If you put the sausage in the batter raw then all the fat will come out of them as they're cooking and keep it moist. the best thing is to lightly cook your sausage and throw away all the fat and have the oven hot enough before you put it in and dont have the mix too thick, put it on the top shelf in the oven till its risen and then put it in the middle with the heat turned down a bit.

A. It means he's terrible at generating insults. I for one am against proposition 8 simply because "marriage" never began as a Christian institution. Secondly, the idea that a civil union could be used instead is absurd. Civil unions do not award the same benefits as a marriage. In a civil union, if one partner dies, the other does not have the same rights to their partner's estate. If one partner dies, insurance companies do not recognize a civil union in the same way as a marriage and the house will not be paid off, nor many other insurance benefits allotted to a husband or a wife. They do not receive the same tax breaks despite the fact that two people in a loving relationship, no matter what the sex, do support one another and keep… [cont.]

How is my oriental fire bellied toad tank?
Q. Alright, this will be my first time with these toads. There still aren't any (toads) in the tank, because I want the tank to be completely ready. The water is about 70 degrees F, so I was thinking about getting a submersible heater. Also, the moss will not stay wet, even if I spray it when I turn off the light, the moss is dry by morning. How does the tank look? I know the filter is pretty visible, and the right part of the water side is a little boring, so what should I put there? Any hardy live plants? Any suggestions for the tank are appreciated. Some tips on taking care of the toads would be great too. Any pictures of oriental fire bellied toad tanks for inspiration?

A. I keep fire-bellied toads, and have a some-what similar set-up. You've done a real good job, looks fantastic. To make the water side more "interesting" You might try putting a larger rock that breaks the water surface over there to give the toads an island. I wouldn't worry about the moss too much, plenty of water available for the toads. If it is a concern to you, you can get a mister that can run off a timer, the only problem is that they are hard to hide. Looks like you have enough room to have a small group of them. You're on the right track, good luck/have fun with them.

How to hold a squirmy toad?
Q. I have to educate children about reptiles/amphibians as my job, and there's this one toad in particular that I always have trouble with. It's a "pacman" toad and you can't put your hands in front of his face (because he'll try and eat them). What is the ideal way to hold him so that he doesn't always try and jump out of my hand? Don't worry, the kids definitely won't be holding him... that's not safe.
Asked by Tanya - Tue May 1 11:54:56 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Hold him in the palm of your hand. His head can go between your fingers and you have control. Rubbing the belly calms him. If you hold tightly around, with fingers on back...he gets scared, like he's prey and will kick and squirm. Remember, rub belly...hold from underneath. (legs dangling)
