How do I eliminate Bufo toads, they are taking over my home?
Q. My yard is full of bufo toads. I have a pond and live on a canal so my only option is to catch as many as I can and dispose of them. I can catch them but then not sure how to dispose of them. They have really tough skin and are toxic to my pets. I figured out that they can not jump out of a garbage can but then I have a can full of toads. So I just wait for them to die on there own. what can I do ??

A. Nowhere, I hope. It's a pernicious pest everywhere it's been introduced. You wouldn't want it running around loose where you live.

Caring for a Bufo A.?
Q. In the near future I am ordering a Bufo Alvarius and the site I plan on ordering from isnt very clear on the method to care for it. What size and kind of cage should I get? What kind of food should I feed it and how often? How often can/should they be milked? May the Spirits shine on you friends, Paris Thank you, I've been told to feed it crickets but it didnt seem like there would be many crickets in its indigenous area so I wasnt sure.

A. Well, well, well, the Colorado river toad, aka the licking toad. They're pretty easy to care for. I would go with at least a 20 gallon long for an adult, but bigger is better. Use a few inches of moist soil since they like to bury themselves. They can eat alot, so at least a few good feedings a week. You can feed pretty much anything they can fit in their mouths, including mice. Dust the crickets with calcium. Now, for the milking. I've never owned them, but I know who a guy who sells them and he told me everything. He dries the excretion and smokes it. He says actually licking them is dangerous and can be fatal. I believe he said he smokes it in a glass pipe like they use for meth, but I don't remember for sure. He said the taste is… [cont.]

What should I know about keeping Cane Toads to keep as pets.?
Q. I want to know about what kind of care they will need. It seems this exotic species of Cane Toads (Bufo marinus) would make a good pet. I've seen them in South Florida and I think I can find some when the rainy season returns.

Any suggestions for attracting toads to my garden?
Q. I've gotten a few books on wildlife-friendly gardening and have implemented the suggestions with much success. However, the books hardly mention toads at all. I know I have at least one toad that roams around my garden, but I want to make a more suitable environment to attract more. I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan so Bufo Americanus is the one I'm trying to attract. Any suggestions, no matter how small, are appreciated :)

A. You have to make available several things: water(as simple as a bowl), a safe place for them to hide and live (an upturned clay pot works just as well as anything, with a hole cut out on the lip), and an environment where they have food. That means leaving the insects alone, since that is a food source. It helps to have shrubbery for them to hide in and find food in safety. I have 4 acres and a pond and have toads/ frogs everywhere, most times in the swimming pool! Develop your landscape as much as you can with shrubbery and cover and I think you will see more toads along with more wildlife.

Are Bufo Toads just as dangerous for cats as they are for dogs?
Q. Two years ago a friend of mine brought his little Yorkshire Terrier over to my house. As he was leaving the Yorkie was acting strange and when we went up to him, we realized he had a Bufo Toad in his mouth. With that, we rushed him to an emergency vet. His mouth was foaming but since we knew the exact cause of it, the Vet was able to cure the problem and he is fine. Last night I went to check on the food station for a group of feral (TNRrd) cats that i feed, and there was a huge, the size of a softball, Bufo toad sitting right next to the food. All the cats were circling it, and my heart dropped after recalling what happened to my friends dog.I grabbled that slimy toad and tossed it into the canal. 4 of the 5 cats seemed fine after… [cont.]

What is this white spot on my pet toad (Bufo Regularis)?
Q. This afternoon I noticed strange white lumps on my African Square Marked Toad. She was hiding most of yesterday so I didn't notice anything strange about her then but when I went to feed her today I notice a large lump on her back with two white lumps on it. I've search around and haven't been able to find any information regarding this. Anyone know what this could be? Here's links to some pics, wish my camera took better up close shots: She didn't seem to have any problem moving around and went right after the crickets like she always does.

A. Toads are amphibians, not reptiles. Females tend to be slightly larger than males and are identical to males in appearance, except for the absence of the yellow-green coloration on the throat. It is still very difficult to tell the difference.

Asked by BlueManticore - Tue Jan 30 19:43:46 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. because the tadpoles and the adults are quite toxic, only a few highly adapted organisms can make a meal of them. The fresh-water snake is one species that can tolerate the toxins. The common crow is another, well in fact the crow just avoids the poison glands all together and pulls the toad's insides out in order to feed on them. Hope this helps!

A. This toad comes out in the summer time after a rain in southern Arizona. They are found all over the roads and on porches etc. looking for bugs. They burro them selves under ground during the hot dry times, I have been digging around a tree and found them two feet under ground, I'm sure this is not the norm but it happened. As to buying one or a pair I wood suggest contacting " The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum" Tucson, Arizona. They have a web sight but I don't know what it is.
