frog
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Frogs are amphibians in the order Anura (meaning "tail-less", from Greek an-, without + oura, tail), formerly referred to as Salientia (Latin saltare, to jump). Most frogs are characterized by long hind legs, a short body, webbed digits (fingers or toes), protruding eyes and the absence of a tail. Frogs are widely known as exceptional jumpers, and many of the anatomical characteristics of frogs, particularly their long, powerful legs, are adaptations to improve jumping performance. Due to their permeable skin, frogs are often semi-aquatic or inhabit humid areas, but move easily on land. They typically lay their eggs in puddles, ponds or lakes, and their larvae, called tadpoles, have gills and develop in water. Adult frogs follow a carnivorous diet, mostly of arthropods, annelids and gastropods. Frogs are most noticeable by their call, which can be widely heard during the night or day, mainly in their mating season. The distribution of frogs ranges from tropic to subarctic regions, but most species are found in tropical rainforests. Consisting of more than 5,000 species described, they are among the most diverse groups of vertebrates. However, populations of certain frog species are declining significantly. A distinction is often made between frogs and toads on the basis of their appearance, caused by the convergent adaptation among so-called toads to dry environments; however, this distinction has no taxonomic basis. The only family exclusively given the common name "toad" is Bufonidae, but many species from other families are also called "toads," and the species within the toad genus Atelopus are referred to as "harlequin frogs". The name frog derives from Old English frogga, (compare Old Norse frauki, German Frosch, older Dutch spelling kikvorsch), cognate with Sanskrit plava (frog), probably deriving from Proto-Indo-European praw = "to jump". How does a frog make such a low sound for its size? Asked by marcin c - Mon Sep 17 13:55:04 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Some frogs, like this Squirrel Treefrog (Hyla squirrela) have vocal pouches that vary in size and stretch like balloons. These sacs serve as a resonating chamber, allowing the frogs to SING!also it makes the pitch Male frogs vocalize by squeezing their lungs with their nostrils and mouth shut. Air flows over their vocal chords and into their vocal sacs blowing it up like a bubble gum balloon! Other frogs can make noises without such a sac. (like my Oriental Firebellied Toads) For some species of frogs, only the males sing. Other types of frogs appear to have both male and female calls. Large frogs have DEEP voices, meaning they call at a low frequency. Small frogs sing in high chirps, meaning they call at a high frequency. I have some questions about African Clawed Frogs, I will be chosing a best answer so make your answers good! -How much is it to buy one frog? (from a store, not online) -When they croak (males) at night, is it so loud that it will keep you awake? How long do they croak for? -What do you feed your frogs and how much does it cost you per week/month? -Filter or no filter? I heard filters are not good for them, would it be OK if I turned teh filter on for like 1-2 hours each day to oxygenate the water? Thank you so much! Asked by Serena - Mon Sep 3 10:25:29 2007 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments A. Cost: the frogs are about $15-$25 at my local PetsMart depending upon size and coloration. The croaking would probably wake you up, but they don't really do it very often. They croak for a few minutes on up to an hour. They can be fed crickets at about 15 cents per cricket from the store, or you can find crickets around your home too. It's best to filter the water as much as possible, but you won't be keeping him in water continuously. You'll want some water and some land for the frog. They don't want to be constantly in water like a fish would. Set up a small aquiarium like a terrarium with some plant material and some dry land and a large bowl for water. Q. We have two frogs, not commons, in our pond one with a green stripe down the middle of its back and one without. Both are dark green, quite knobly, do not have black flashes behind their eyes and cream rather than yellow tummies. I think they are marsh frogs but cannot rule out the [extinct] pool frog. We live in Somerset on the edge of the levels. Asked by Alan G - Mon Jun 18 12:51:38 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Sounds exciting if they are pool frogs. Have you thought of contacting "someone who knows" - maybe the British Museum, who could make a positive identification? Or who might know a man who knows?
